Registrant requirements
The registrant's contact person must have an address in Rio de Janeiro. No change of contact is allowed. You must also publish a website on the domain name, which must contain meaningful content.
Registration procedure
New registrations are verified by the registry before activation.
This verification process can take up to several business days.
Because there are requirements for the content of the domain name, the registry may occasionally re-verify the website.
If the registry finds that the domain does not meet all the requirements,
they will contact the domain owner to resolve the problems.
Uncorrected issues may result in the suspension of the domain name.
The domain can be unlocked after the registrant has resolved the problem and responded to the registry.
Reserved names
The Rio city government has created a "reserved list". Domains on this list are shown as unavailable in Regery. Contact us if you would like to register such a domain name. Generic terms will likely be rejected, but requests for non-generic terms will be investigated by the City. If you would like us to apply for a reserved domain name, send us the following information:
- Domain Name
- Taxpayer ID of the potential registrant
- Name / Legal name of the potential registrant
- Physical address in Rio and a utility bill containing that address
- Other similar domain names already owned by this registrant
- Purpose of use of this particular domain
No additional fees are required, but be prepared for a very slow process.

Domain length
A .RIO domain is between 2 and 63 characters long.
Registration period
The minimum RIO domain registration period is one year, the maximum is ten years.
