A self-signed SSL certificate can be used to configure and work with the SSL environment during development. You can use such a self-signed SSL certificate when security is not required, such as for web servers for testing and debugging, as well as personal websites and web portals. To create a self-signed SSL certificate, enter a site name (example: mysite.com) and click 'Create SSL'.
Using SSL Certificates
SSL certificates are required when you need to open websites using the HTTPS protocol. Professional websites require professional, trusted SSL certificates from SSL certificate authorities such as Comodo, Symantec, Thawte, GeoTrust, RapidSSL. Trusted SSL certificates use a chain of trust where each certificate is signed (trusted) by a higher and more trusted certificate. At the top of the chain of trust are root certificates belonging to Verisign or GeoTrust. These root certificates usually come with your operating system or web browser.

How the browser analyzes the SSL response
When you visit a website using the HTTPS protocol, your web browser receives an SSL certificate for the website. It checks the SSL certificate to make sure that it is indeed issued for that domain name you are opening. It will then check the chain of trust and who signed it. If that SSL certificate is a root certificate, the browser will compare it to the ones that come with the operating system. If it is not the root certificate but is signed by a trusted SSL certificate, it will check the entire chain of trust.

When using a self-signed SSL certificate, it has no chain of trust. The certificate is signed by itself. The web browser will detect this and show a warning, letting you know that the website certificate is not trusted. Therefore, you should not use self-signed SSL certificates for professional use, as your visitors will not trust your website and may refuse to use it.
