A self-signed SSL certificate can be used to configure and work with non-production SSL environment. SSL certificates usage
SSL certificates are required when you need to open web sites though the HTTPS protocol. Trusted SSL certificates use a chain of trust, where each certificate is signed (trusted) by a higher, more credible certificate. At the top of the chain of trust are the root certificates, owned by Verisign or GeoTrust. Such root certificates typically shipped with your operating system or web browser.

How browsers analyze SSL response
When you visit a web site by HTTPS protocol, your web browser will receive the ssl certificate for the web site. It will check the certificate to see that is valid for the domain name you are trying to visit. After that, it will verify the chain of trust and who has signed the certificate. If that certificate is a root certificate, it will compare it against the ones shipped with the operating system. If it is a non-root certificate, but trusted, it will check whole chain of trust.

When using a self-signed SSL certificate, there is no chain of trust. The certificate has signed itself. The web browser will detect it and show a warning, telling you that the web site certificate is not trusted. Therefore, you should not use self-signed SSL certificates for professional use, as your visitors will not trust your web site and may refuse to use it.
